Mt. Bethel Cemetery is situated about 2 1/2 miles from Gary to the Southwest on Farm Road # 999. It is a large cemetery on a hillside which requires terraced levels to prevent washing or eroding. Nearby is Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
Five acres were first donated for a church school and cemetery by Isaac Pike. Later an additional plot was given by J. R. Atkerson.
A newspaper clipping gave Mr. Joe Pike as the first grave; and Mrs. Sam Arkerson as second buried here during the Civil War.
