Jacob Gardner Boydstun
1812-1899
Jacob Gardner Boydstun and his family, together with members of the Holland, Ground, and
Lowe families, and perhaps others, migrated from Barren and Warren Counties in Kentucky to
Abington, Knox County, Illinois. Texas, in 1833. The group left on Boydstun's wedding day
to Drusilla Ground, 27 August 1833. After a disappointing decade in Illinois, members of
the same families in 1848 moved to Texas. The trip took 6 weeks by river and wagon.
When they arrived in the Dallas area, the men took out south to choose land available for
claim under the conditions of Peters Colony. The men were led by Texas Rangers who chained
logs to their horses to flatten the grasses to allow passage. The prairie grasses grew as
high as a man's head on horseback.
Boydstun's 640 acre claim is described by Roberta Dukes Richardson as containing "a
large cedar break, a small range of hills that rose majestically from the rolling prairie,
with a fertile valley watered by a stream that the Indians had named 'Mountain
Creek.'" Its southern border extends by 23 acres into Ellis County with 617 acres in
Dallas County. It is not far east of the Tarrant County line. This author found Roberta's
description to be very accurate, but would add that the hillsides were spotted with
blooming prickly pear cactus as well. Boydstun's claim is patented June 12, 1856, No. 345,
Vol. 13.
The settlers' homes were built of cedar logs. With the passage of time, more rooms were
added, halls and long porches, and better windows and doors replaced the old ones. The
original Boydstun dwelling was named "the Big Room," where there occurred a
triple wedding of three of Boydstun's daughters in 1867. But the old stone chimney of
Boydtun's house remained unchanged, and weathered the ravages of time for 72 years until
it was destroyed by fire in the year 1920.
Jacob Gardner Boydstun and Drusilla Ground had the following children:

Drusilla Ground Boydstun died in 1856 and is buried next to her husband at Pleasant
Valley. Her grave had no stone until one was placed in 1998 by her descendants, using
dates passed down by her granddaughter, Roberta Dukes Richardson. Jacob G. Boydstun second
married Mrs. Sarah Louisa "Lou" Wilson Vaught on 4 Oct 1862 and had two more
children, James (b. 1864) and Sarah Louisa (1 Feb 1866-9 May 1951) married Allen T.
Baggett.
The community of these settlers was called Pleasant Valley, but later commerce could be
found at Cedar Hill. Jacob Gardner Boydstun gave three acres of land to build a church
from the northeast portion of his land. The church did not survive time, leaving the
cemetery, which is still open for burials, located in an isolated area of the hills.
In 1938, the James Butler Bonham Chapter, DRT voted to survey old cemeteries in Dallas
County, Texas. They were joined in surveying these cemeteries by members of the Jane
Douglas Chapter, DAR. The record of this transcription can be found in the Texas State
Library at Austin, Texas, #686101. The ladies made the decision not to record children's
headstones unless parents were also found. In the case of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery
(which they also erroneously called the Holland Cemetery), some dates were found to be
incomplete or incorrect by this writer. However, since this is the earliest record of the
cemetery I have found, their results are included here, marked by **, with notes
following, where needed.
Robert Dukes Richardson, granddaughter of Jacob Gardner Boydstun, recorded a number of the
headstones during a period of active research in the 1930s as well. From her notes, it was
learned that there are burials for several "coloreds" near the creek. Because
the creek has eroded the border of the cemetery, and these graves are largely unmarked, it
is not known if they survive.
Margaret Richardson Bates, this author, and granddaughter of Roberta Dukes Richardson,
visited the cemetery for the first time in 1980, and again in 1984, 1992, and 1998. Twice,
the large, obelisk stone of J.G. Boydston was found broken and on the ground, an indicator
of vandalism that had occurred in this little country cemetery. In 1980, I photographed
many of the headstones bearing familiar names. I have saved notes from each visit to the
cemetery, as well as correspondence containing data from other transcribers, including
Karen Esberger of Midlothian, Texas, Jane Goodwin of Waxahachie, Texas, and others. When
my collected data conflicts with other recorded data, it is noted.
In 1992, Brenda Raye (then Taylor) of Cedar Hill, Texas, following several incidents of
vandalism, took an intense interest in the cemetery and set out to obtain information
about each individual buried in the cemetery. She gathered family group sheets for each
family, having contacted many descendents. She began the process, through the Texas
Historical Commission, of approval of a marker for the cemetery as a historic site. The
marker was dedicated on May 20, 1995. Brenda's information is supplied here in brackets {
}. Her database included complete dates, including day and month, when available. Where
possible, I have noted this, if the complete date was not on the headstone. Her data may
also be indicated by "BT" and frequently includes family relationships which are
not found on the headstones, and are valuable to researchers. Brenda and her father
replaced and/or repaired several stones in the cemetery which had disappeared or been
destroyed by vandalism.
The cemetery is located about 5-6 north of Midlothian on a blacktop road and 3-4 miles
southwest of Cedar Hill. My directions indicate traveling east on Highway 67 from
Midlothian to Mount Lebanon Road, then to Texas Plume Road (turn north or left),
continuing a while until you go around a bend where cemetery can be seen to the right.
However, Texas Plume Road was unmarked in 1992, and it was not easy to find. The cemetery
is on Texas Plume Road between Ellis Road and Lake Ridge Parkway. It is still active, and
is maintained by a cemetery association. Because of the efforts of Brenda Raye and others,
vandalism has been reduced by regular police patrol and much damage has been repaired.
