History: When Nineteen year old Jessie Hill died in 1905, his remains were buried on land that would become the Brownfield Cemetery. In 1907 the land belonged to M. V. Brownfield, a rancher of prominence who graced the area with his presence. Records today do not indicate if the cemetery was named for him but since the town of Brownfield was named for his son A.M. Brownfield by A. F. Small and W. G. Hardin, it is likely that the cemetery was named for the town in which it's residents would be buried 

The cemetery fell into decline after the world wars, and by the 1940's the ethnic makeup of the cemetery had changed with noticeable changes in style of grave decoration. Migrant workers from Mexico working in the area contributed to a large number of the graves interned there today. The reorganization of the Cemetery Association in the 1980's gave the cemetery it's much needed improvements, but of the 2,000 graves, about 375 of them remain unmarked.
