Estacado Cemetery

Lubbock County, Cemeteries of Texas

Updated thru Dec 31st 2009
Location: A rancher in the area was able to help me locate this cemetery, he, a direct descendent of the Walker family - Quakers who first settled the area in the early 1880's. We indeed found his kin there at the cemetery he directed us to. He said, "See those group of trees? That's it, just go back to the pavement and head north until you get to a turn row, the turn east down that turn row and your there." He was full of stories. Now for the real directions: From Lorenzo, go West on Hwy 62/82, turn right or North on 3900 and go about one mile. Cemetery is in a group of old oak trees to the right on a turn row about a half mile to the East. The next paved road to the North is 1527 that runs East-West.

History:   This cemetery list was compiled by Deloise Bumpous McKnight, and Johnnie D. McKnight on Aug. 21, 1964, of the Estacado Cemetery which they claim was the first in Lubbock County, of marker inscriptions found there on that date listed seventy markers, and the following account of it's history:
"A town founded in 1879 by a colony of English Quakers under the leadership of Isaac Paris Cox, a buffalo hunter who purchased for them 82 sections of land, the town first named Marietta in honor of Mary Cox, wife of the leader. Renamed Estacado in 1886 when Crosby County was organized. By 1893 the colony had disintegrated. Moved in 1895 to Frienswood, Galveston County, Texas."
Also listed by the McKnight's were three graves identified by Edith Tipps nee Wheelock, with no markers, including one of Mary Ellen Cox - the first person buried there who died from a rattlesnake bite - the daughter of Isaac Cox, one with two infants of the Day Family, and one with Mrs. Robb, mother of Fred Robb - buried there, the account being included here:
"Edith Tipps nee Wheelock tells that her mother (who was a Hunt and a Quaker of Estacado) helped identify the gravesite of Mary Ellen Cox and some woman, when some years later these bodies were moved. (To Frienswood?)"
Also a note included by the McKnight's was for the grave site of Martha Jane Lowe Kelsey:
"A daughter is Mrs. Frank Kerr of Idalou, Texas. (Amye Kelsey was sister of cousin Myra Kerr.)"
