Bear Creek Cemetery

Kimble County, Cemeteries of Texas

Submitted by Frederica Burt Wyatt , July 6, 2000.

Location: On FM 2291 approximately twelve miles from Junction.

History: The first record of Bear Creek cemetery is from an account of the 1870 killing of Stephen Cavaness (Caviness) by Lt. Bullis and his Buffalo soldiers from Fort McKavett. The second person laid to rest here was James Sewell, who was ambushed by Indians in the nearby hills in 1872. One acre of land out of Survey #418, H. Rabe, was deeded October 28, 1909, by N.J.Hall to J.S. Durst, County Judge, for use as a cemetery.

At least four veterans of the War Between the States, as well as veterans of other wars, were buried here. Lawrence Walker, who died of pneumonia during World War I, was returned here for his final rest.

Velma Rape Dutton, Josie Baylor Bishop, and Rolene Guthrie Stewart previously surveyed this cemetery. Their information was invaluable in our research. Rob Roy Spiller, a diligent and faithful volunteer, oversees the care of this historic site.
