McWhorter Rites Today In Lamesa

LAMESA (SC) - Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel for William Burton McWhorter, 87. Burial will be in Lamesa Memorial Park.

Mr. McWhorter, who first came here in 1897 when what is now Dawson County was under the jurisdiction of Howard County in 1897, had resided in Dawson County longer than any other person. He died at 1 a.m. Friday at Medical Arts Hospital after an illness of many months. Born Sept. 4,1873, in Jones County, he came here with his parents when a child. He was employed several years by Col. C.C. Slaughter, pioneer cattle baron. He married Dora Hailey in Marshall Tx. in 1922(1902) and settled four miles east of Lamesa then moved to town 45 years ago. Mrs. McWhorter died last spring.

McWhorter once served as city water commissioner and had been a grocer and service station operator. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Murray McWhorter of Austin; two daughters, Mrs. Gus Ragsdale and Mrs. Oll D. Harris, both of Lamesa; one sister, Mrs. L. F. Kennedy of Lubbock; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
