Resthaven Cemetery

Quitaque, Briscoe Co., Cemeteries of TX

Recorded and transcribed by Dean Burson, Martha Hawk and Betty Moeller

History: Resthaven Cemetery started the Friday before Easter in 1922. The Howard brothers originally owned the 10 acres of land. We are not for sure if the land, for the cemetery, was donated by the Howard brothers or by the Colliers.

Miss Daniels was the first one buried in the cemetery in 1922. She was a school teacher at Quitaque. Fish's mother, Ruth Wilson wife of Otis Wilson, had the first tombstone set in place in 1923.

Before the Resthaven Cemetery was set up, the deceased from Quitaque were buried in Silverton, Flomot or Turkey.

Location: The cemetery is found by driving 2 miles East of Quitaque on highway 86, then South on highway 599 for about 1/4 mile. Cemetery is on the East side of highway and has a rock wall entrance and north and south sides.
