The Toledo Tribune Dec 23, 2005 Major Mary Breazeale Pelican Cemetery Major Mary Breazeale, U. S. Army, retired, departed this life on Monday, December 26, 2005 after a long illness. She was born on February 11, 1913 in Pelican, where she grew up, graduating from Pelican High School. She continued her education at Louisiana Tech. After graduating there, she trained as a hospital dietician at Highland Hospital in Shreveport and Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. At the onset of World War II, she was working in the Panama Canal Zone and there entered the Army as a second lieutenant. She served in the United States, England, France and Japan attaining the rank of Major. She retired to Pelican. She was active in the Pelican United Methodist Church, the Home Demonstration Club, and many other community activities. Major Breazeale was predeceased by her parents, Fred Norman Breazeale and Thelma Joyner Breazeale. She is survived by three first cousins, Haven Howell and J. W. Joyner, both of Pelican; and J. R. Joyner of Lafayette; and four nieces and nephews, Debra Nunn of Houston, Texas, Annette McDavid Gonzales, Hugh Joyner of Lakeland, Florida, and Henry Joyner of Colleyville, Texas. She also leaves many friends. Visitation was held on December 28 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Pelican United Methodist Church. Services were at 11:00 a.m. and burial followed in the Pelican Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Pelican United Methodist Church, the Methodist Children’s Home or the Pelican Cemetery Association.
