The Shreveport Times Wednesday, September 07, 2005 James E. Boswell (Jimmy) Highland Cemetery, Mansfield, DeSoto, LA SHREVEPORT, LA - James E. Boswell (Jimmy) of Shreveport, LA passed away Monday, September 5, 2005. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the parlor of the Broadmoor Presbyterian church, with the funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary on Thursday, September 8th. The graveside service will follow at 4:45 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in Mansfield, La. Reverend Steven Dyer, Pastor at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church, will conduct the service. Mr. Boswell was born July 14, 1916 in North Zulch, Texas. He was a member of Broadmoor Presbyterian for many years and a Shreveport resident since 1946. Following high school, he received a basketball scholarship to attend Northwestern State. He was an outstanding point guard there and received his B.S. in Education in 1942. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, training recruits during World War II. He and Athlyn married in 1943. After discharge from the Navy in 1945, he attended graduate school at LSU. In 1946 he and Athlyn settled in Shreveport where he was employed with the Veterans Administration working at a number of positions in administration and volunteer services for disabled veterans until his retirement in 1975. From then until Athlyn retired in 1987 he was chef and gardener for the household, providing the vegetables and meals for a working wife. Jimmy was preceded in death by his father James Asa Boswell and mother Maude Payne Boswell; son, Rodney Payne Boswell; brother, Robert Morris Boswell; sisters, Louise Carpenter and Pearl Mills. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Athlyn Thigpen Boswell, son, James T. and wife Nancy of Montgomery, Texas, grandchildren, Emily and Andy, of College Station, Texas, and Brannon of Huntsville, Texas; sister, Betty Ruth Botting and husband Bill, Hitchcock, Texas; and one brother Thomas O. Boswell, Bryan, Texas. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Brannon and Andy Boswell and James Thigpen, Don English, G.B. Hall III, and Jimmy Stephens. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Broadmoor Presbyterian Church, 1915 Grover Place, Shreveport, LA 71105 or the charity of your choice.
