Hilda Harris Teague

Grand Cane Cemetery, DeSoto Pr.

GRAND CANE, LA - On Thursday, May 21st, Hilda Harris Teague (91) died in Crown Point, IN. Mrs. Teague, a life long Baptist, is survived by two sisters; Jean Willis and Evelyn Calhoun, four sons; Jim, Sam, John & Ronnie, ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Along with her sister, Bess, Hilda was an anchor on the girl's basketball team at Grand Cane High School. The Harris family lived in Louisiana's first public High School building, close to the current school, and could boast the first indoor toilet in town.

Upon graduation at age sixteen Hilda was less than truthful about her age and enrolled in the Shreveport Charity Hospital nursing school. When the New London, TX school exploded in 1937 Hilda and the other nursing students were used as morgue attendants helping parents identify their children. Upon graduation Hilda married AJ Teague and followed him in his career while working as an operating room nurse in hospitals from Big Springs, TX to Plaquemine, LA. Most of her career was in central Louisiana where she was nursing supervisor at Huey Long Charity Hospital. Hilda and AJ were frequent travelers, usually to cities where her sisters lived. After her husband died in 1981 Hilda would often, at a moment's notice, drive to visit family anywhere from Houston to Maryland. In her late eighties she reluctantly gave up her car and relied on others for her frequent trips. At that time Hilda moved to Indiana to be with her son, Ronnie, and daughter-in-law, Paula.

Hilda Harris Teague was loved by friends and family and touched the lives of thousands of patients in Louisiana and Texas. All who knew her loved her and we will miss her. Viewing will be at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Mansfield, LA. Saturday, May 23, from 5pm to 9pm. Funeral services will be held at Grand Cane Baptist Church at 2pm Sunday and interment will follow at the Grand Cane Cemetery. Kilpatrick's Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Mansfield, LA 318-872-4660
