McCracken Cemetery

The McCracken Cemetery lies in Wilson County near the points that the Wilson and Gonzales County lines come together.  it is located on private property off of CR 222 on a mesquite hill about three quarters of a mile from the site of Albuquerque.   At an earlier point in time it had been referred to as the Old Albuquerque Cemetery.  The town of Albuquerque Post Office 1870-1883 creased to exist.   It is not known when the cemetery became known as the McCracken Cemetery

Samuel L. McCracken and Anderson Cole Smith both settled on the M. C. Wing Survey # 143 in the late 1850's, one establishing his dwelling where Albuquerque grew up and the other at a place closer to where the cemetery is.   Two acres were set aside around 1860 by Anderson Cole Smith for two cemeteries--one acre for the whites and one acre for the blacks.  It is believed that the first burial in the white cemetery was ten year old Ninian McCracken.  Ninian was killed in a gin accident at Albuquerque.  The majority of the graves are McCracken's and Smiths.

Anderson Cole Smith was Karon Mac Smith's great-grandfather.  Simply known as "Mac" to family and friends she cared for the cemetery and did the original reading during the 1980's.  Her information was grouped by families and is published in her book  On the Watershed of Ecleto and the Clear Fork of Sandies printed in April,, 1983.  An Up dated reading was done in July 2008.(Joane Ermis  2008)
