Stockton Cemetery

Wharton County, Cemeteries of Texas

Submitted by Lois Kennedy

Cemeteries of Texas Coordinator: Dolores I. Bishop

Located 3 miles west of East Bernard off Hwy 90-A, exit CR 270 to CR 289. Located on private lands, entry via a locked gate. This cemetery was used by early settlers of the area. Many of the markers were broken or had lost parts. In 1950, Jack Quirey erected a pipe fence around the burials of Melissa & Walter Stockton to protect them from cattle intrusion. Oct 02 1984, Ramona Quirey and Sue Carmichael completed a cemetery survey and found it over grown and neglected. In 2001, Mason Locke took on the restoration of the cemetery to achieve his Eagle Scout rank. Land cleared of all under growth and invasive trees and a new fence built to contain entire cemetery. Jack Quirey (3rd) and Mason Locke (5th) are descendants of the Stockton family.
