Spanish Camp/County Pauper Cemetery

Wharton County, Cemeteries of Texas

This cemetery is located near Spanish Camp community some 4 miles east of Egypt off FM 1161 to the south, accessed by a dirt road and next to Peach Creek. This cemetery was created by Wharton County Commissioners Court for county paid burials aka indigent or "pauper". This .5-acre tract has only one burial, and because of the lack of maintenance and the remote location, it has not been utilized. Commissioners Court later deemed that, due to rising funeral expenses, that all county paid "burials" were to be cremated only costs paid. The county has put up this tract for sale and if the sale is complete, the burial may be moved to accommodate the new owner's request.
