Co. Courthouse, Hempstead, TX "A report dated
July 12, 1867, listed "between 600 and (sic) 800" burials at
Hempstead. The local cemetery corporation had donated five acres for a
soldiers lot. According to the report one hundred of these soldiers were
known, but no list of names is in the file. Volume 6 of the Roll of Honor
lists four soldiers from the 12th Illinois Cavalry who died on September 17,
1865, "near Hempstead." No other information on these burials can
be found. Col. Mack's report (1871) does not list these burials."
