Location: From Loop on south side of Carthage, Tx, take US 59 toward Houston. About 2 miles take a left on to FM 2517, go 2.6 miles to 699, turn left, go .6 mile turn right on to CR 4053. Drive .4 of a mile to the Anderson Cemetery. The Cemetery is located on a hill surrounded, by a chain link fence and arch entrance with "Anderson" name, there is also a covered meeting area, with covered tables before you enter the cemetery, that was erected in 1961 and the support poles are the original light poles from the old Panola County Court House square. They date from early 1900 and were donated to the Anderson Cemetery by the power company when the old court house was torn down It is clean, mowed and well kept. 

The land for the Anderson Cemetery was deed to the Anderson Cemetery Association  over a hundred years ago. It has been maintained by the Anderson Family since its inception. My sisters Bettie Ross, Edna Lovil (deceased-buried there) and cousins Mollie Anderson Barber and John Garrison Anderson (deceased-buried there) started hoeing the grass off the cemetery in the mid-forties. No grass was allowed to grow and it was bare dirt back then. It was fenced by barb-wire and tables had been installed on the front portion by the road. 

My grandmother  (Alma Bone Anderson) kept the money that was collected on the 2nd Sunday in June at the "all day dinner on the ground meeting" which would be attended by over 100 people. Most all descendants of the Andersons in some way or fashion. I still have to this day the monetary records where people donated back then because my mother (Shirley Anderson Salter) was the secretary of the association. The graveyard has never been plowed or any markers moved. No one has ever been exhumed and moved. 

Our oldest living member now is my aunt Oma Hudson Anderson (approaching 90) and she has all the history and I love talking with her about our cemetery. The chain link fence was erected in 1960. That was the year that Marcus Salter (my 1st cousin) initiated the perpetual care system that we are striving to accomplish now. The grass was allowed to grow in 1958 and all graves were leveled off at that time (they were mounded up still at that time) so we could mow easier. When the Panola County Historical Society wanted to place Jonathan Andersons marker we had to approximate his position by memory and also his three wives. It is very close but his grave and the wives were not marked by stones at that time. I love the history of my cemetery and I know that you want the record historically correct. 

You might want to know that by family legend, slaves were buried in the lower left quadrant as you enter. I do not know how many because they never had permanent markers. As legend and folklore go it was more than one but I cannot guess as to the approximate number. I would like the record to show that we probably have some blacks in Panola County with ancestors buried there.  Respectfully J.E.Salter (2002)

The Cemetery was named for Jonathan Anderson 1798-1890. He donated one hundred acres of land for a place for the County Seat of Panola Co, Carthage, TX.---He is buried at the feet of his three wives as he requested. Dempsy and Mary Elizabeth McFadden Morris are my husbands great grandparents. Dempsy's son,  Jack Morris  is his grandfather. gbm
