Como Cemetery is located in Como, Hopkins County, Texas. Como is located on Hwy 11 going southeast from Sulphur Springs.
When an unmarked grave is added from an obituary, please check and make sure this person is buried in this cemetery. Allred, Grover C. - b. 9 Aug. 1884, d. 6 Nov. 1935 (Obituary - G. C. Allred died Nov. 6, 1935, and was born Aug. 9, 1884, in Mississippi. He was brought to Texas by his parents when just a small boy. Nov. 8, 1909, he married Miss Lee Isom of Frisco, Texas. Soon after his marriage he moved to Hopkins County and lived in and around Como until his death. He is survived by his wife and four children: Mrs. Cleo Anderson, Dallas; Doyle, G. C. ,Jr, and Dorothy Sue, all of Pickton; two sisters, Mrs. Dick Moore, Childress, Texas; Mrs. Ford Westbook, Brookhaven, Mississippi. He was in St. Paul’s Hospital at Dallas at the time of his death. His body was brought back to Como for burial.)

Brown, William - b. 17 Jan. 1849, d. 23 Nov. 1929( Obituary - William Brown, known as Bill, died Saturday at his home in Forest Academy after a short illness with pneumonia. He was 81 years old at the time of his death. He was born in Franklin County , Illinois, on Jan. 17, 1849, and lived there until about 30 years old when he moved to Hopkins County where he continued to live till the time of his death. He was married to E. V. Gipson Dec. 31, 1875. To this union nine children were born, three girls and six boys. He is survived by his wife and six children as follows: Mrs. Frank Gamblin, Mrs. Fred Beville and Wesley Brown, Como; Mrs. C. E. Hogan, Sulphur Springs; Lester Brown, Dallas; and Will Brown, Mineola. Funeral services and burial took place at Como, conducted by Rev. W.D. Hollingsworth, assisted by the Masonic Order of which the deceased was a member.)

Cannon, Josephine Parchman - b. 24 June 1855, in Aberdeen, Mississippi, d. 22 Jan. 1908, in St. Louis, Mo., w/o C. A. Cannon ( Obituary - Mrs. Josephine Cannon, wife of Dr. Charles W. Cannon, died at the family home in St. Louis, Mo., Tues, Tuesday, January 22, 1908, aged 53 years. Her remains were carried to Como, Texas, interment was made in the family burial gound at the Como cemetery. She was a daughter of Marion and Sarah Parchman, pioneers. The surviving members of the family being Mrs. Green Carroll, Mrs. Lawrence Carroll and Mrs. Bettie Jeffress, half-sisters of Mrs. Cannon, all of whom reside in Hopkins County. She was also the aunt of Mrs. C. C. Sheppard. Her childhood and youth was spent at Como, but for a number of years has resided at St. Louis where her husband, Dr. Cannon, was stationed as special medical examiner in the Federal service. At the age of fourteen years she professed religion, joining the Como Methodist Chuch. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Cook Avenue Methodist Church in St. Louis, Mo.) (S.S. Gazette)

Carroll, Green H. - b. 24 Sept. 1851, d. 14 Nov. 1910 (Obituary - Seldom has it been our duty to record so sudden a death, and one so unexpected as that of G. H. (Green) Carroll, whose death occurred aat his home Monday morning. It was not generally known that he was sick, and few knew that he was dangerously sick He was sick only a few days with fever, developing Sunday morning into pneumonia. Mr. Carroll was born in Mississippi 59 years ago. At the age of 20 years he moved with his father to Texas, locating at Como where he has since resided. He leaves a wife and a number of children, all of whom have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow. Burial occurred at the City cemetery, with funeral services being conducted by Rev. W. L. Tittle, assisted by H. N. G. Bentley. He leaves a wife and five daughters and four sons.) Crowder, Sam - 1858 - 1920 (Obituary - Sam Crowder, age 65, highly respected citizen of Como, committed suicide Wednesday. He had been up to Como, and his son-in-law, Edgar Stanley, had carried him home in an auto. When they reached home, Mrs. Crowder was over at a neighbors visiting. Mr. Stanley told him he would go over and bring Mrs. Crowder home. Funeral services were held at the home of J. D. Jumper in Como. Bro. Edd Holt of Sulphur Springs conducted the services. Burial following in the Como cemetery. He was 68 years old at the time of his death, being a native of Scio, Ohio. He came to Texas early in life and had been an employee of the M. K. & T. Railway for more than forty years. He was married to Miss Della McGarity, daughter of Dr. & Mrs. T. E. McGarity of Como, in 1900, who survives him. Funeral services where held in the home with burial in the Como cemetery.) He was one of Como s first setters and was one of the best physicians. He was laid to rest in the Como cemetery with Masonic honors, Rev. York conducting the funeral service. (S.S. Gazette, Jan. 24, 1908) Resolutions of respect - He was a member of the Como Lodge No. 834, A. F. & A. M., Como, Texas. Dr. Lewis was born in La Grange, Georgia, in May 1839, and as a lad came to Texas with his father, Dr. Howell Lewis, in 1852, his home being at Elysian Fields, in Harrison county, where he grew to manhood an studied medicine under his father’s guidance, preparatory to attending college. His medical education was completed at Tulane University, New Orleans, La., where he secured a diploma and at once returned home and commenced the practice of his profession. He was married in 1865, to Miss Florence E. Helms of Marshall, Texas, by whom he had nine children, five boys and four girls; two of those boys, Paul and Warner, and three of the girls, Miss Ann Lewis, Mrs. Sallie Sterrit, and Mrs. Jim Harlow, are left to mourn the loss of a loving father. Mrs. Lewis, two of the boys and one of the girls, passed into eternity some years since. Dr. Lewis became a Mason in Reily Springs in 1874. Dr. Lewis gave four years of arduous service to the Confederate cause. ( S. S. Gazett)

McGarity, pioneer citizen of Hopkins county, died Thursday night, Nov. 8, 1929, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B.E. Morris, on College Street, after a short illness, although he had been in declining health for several months. He was 86 years old at the time of his death and had lived most of his life in Hopkins County. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. B. E. Morris, Sulphur Springs; Dr. T. E. McGarity, Como; Mrs. Fred T. Lee, California; Gouch McGarity, Nebraska; and Jim McGarity, Houston. He is also survived by two brothers, Dr. E. P. McGarity of Waco and Will McGarity of Como. He was born in Olglethorpe, Georgia, June 1843 and came to Texas in 1862, settling in Hopkins County. He joined the ranks of the Confederate Army soon after coming into this state and did valiant service for the Southland during that bloody struggle. He returned to Hopkins County again after the war, and in the year 1870 was married to Miss Millie (sic)Page. To this union were born nine children, four having died in early life. After the death of his wife twelve years ago, Mr. McGarity has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. B. E. Morris, in Sulphur Spirngs. Since coming to Hopkins county he has lived in Cumby, Pine Forrest and Como. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church of Como, conducted by Reb. Lester McKinney with burial in Como cemetery.)

Mhoon, James Harvey - 1865 - 1934 (J. H. Mhoon passed away Feb. 16, 1934, at his home at Star Ridge following an illness of pneumonia. He is survived by his wife and three daughters, Misses Ethel, Christine, and Lorene Mhoon, of Star Ridge. He had lived nearly all life in Hopkins county. His daugther, Miss Ethel Mhoon, a graduate of Sulphur Springs High School, was reported seriously ill with pneumonia Saturday. He was born August 19, 1862, in Arkansas. Came to Texas 56 years ago. He was married to Miss Maud James in 1912. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Largent of Winnsboro with interment in the Como Cemetery. ( Hopkins Co. Funeral services and burial took place at Como, conducted by Elder Largent. She was born near Scottsboro, Ala., about the year 1856, and was left an orphan in the year 1863, her father giving his life for the cause of the South. Her mother left them a year or so later, leaving two sons and four daughters who grew to young manhood and womanhood in homes provided by strangers in the reconstructions days. Her brothers and sisters preceded her in death. In the year 1880, she was married to Mr. Tom Neighbors. She, with her husband, one son and adopted daughter, came to Texas in 1890, and spent the remainder of her life in Wood and Hopkins counties. Vanderslice, I. C. - b. 24 Dec. 1849, d. 29 Nov. 1929 (Obituary - Columbus Vanderslice, pioneer citizen of Como community, died Saturday in McKinney following an operation. The remains were carried back to Como where funeral services and burial took place, conducted by Rev. Hays, pastor of the church at that place. Mr. Vanderslice had been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for nearly sixty years. He was 80 years, 10 months, 15 days of age. He was born in Harrison County, but moved to Como, in Hopkins County, where he had lived for the past fifty years. He married Miss Margaret Clark, also of Harrison County, in 1872. She died Feb. 7th of this year. Eleven children were born to them, nine of whom - five boys and four girls - still survive. One of whom is Prof. Ben Vanderslice of Avinger. He also leaves a sister and a half-brother. (Obit dated Nov. 1929) (One will note the number of children born to them are different in his wife’s obitutary)
Vanderslice, M. J. , Mrs. - b. 28 Nov. 1857, d. 7 Feb. 1929 (Obituary - Mrs. M. J. Vanderslice died Feb. 7, 1929, at the home of her son, Mr. Milford Vanderslice. She had been sick almost two weeks with the flu and developed pneumonia a few days before her death. She was 72 years of age and had lived in Hopkins County most of her life. She was married to Mr. I.C. Vanderslice at the age of 16. There were sixteen childern born to this union, nine of whom are still living. She leaves a husband and the following children: Ben Vanderslice, Cass County; Tom Vanderslice and Mrs. Edna Mosley, Alba; John Vanderslice, Reily Springs; Ruff Vanderslice, Dallas; Milford Vanderslice, Como; Mrs. Ora Sailors, Hugo, Okla.; Mrs Myrt Turns, Medina; and Mrs. Mamie White, Fort Worth. She was a member of the Black Oak Baptist Church.

Williamson, highly esteemed pioneer citizen of Hopkins County, died Monday morning on her 87th birthday anniversary at her home in Como. She had been in declining health for several weeks and death was expected. She was born the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Johnson near Meridian, Mississippi, on April 18, 1851. Her family came to Texas in 1870. Her husband died January 7, 1915. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Emma Hambrick of McKinney, and Mrs. Ned Williams of Como, two daughters, Mrs. J. W. Kight and Mrs. Hugh Miller, both of Como, two sons, Bruce and Tobe Williams of Sulphur Springs. Final rites will be conducted at the Como Methodist Church, which church the deceased had long been a faithful member. Rev. Carl Reynolds, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Mt.
