LOCATION: 1201 South Main Street, McAllen Texas

HISTORY: When the St Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railroad branch reached the site of McAllen in 1904, McAllen Town site Company was organized for West McAllen (1904), which grew slowly. A second town site, formed for East McAllen in 1907, prospered.

Roselawn Cemetery and Mausoleum was founded in 1908 on 22 acres donated by the Hidalgo Canal Company. Oldest marked grave is that of Dr. H. P. Battey (1861-1909). Many pioneer McAllenites are buried here.

Roselawn Cemetery is governed by an eight-member board, and is owned by the shareholders. It is non-denominational, perpetual care. There is a veterans’ area with flagpole, where memorial services are held each Memorial Day. The mausoleum was built in 1961, and additions made in 1984 and 2000. A potters’ field is maintained.
