HISTORY:  In 1911, former Texas Ranger Sam Earnst Lane (1847-1925) bought the 11,000-acre Santa Guadalupe Ranch from Jesus Maria Vela and his daughter Irene, of Laguna Seca Ranch.  He renamed it Sam Lane Ranch.  He married Mercedes Fierho, an Austrian; their one son Jack was born in 1894.  A stockman, he acquired over 20,000 acres of ranchland in Hidalgo and Starr Counties. Lane brought in one of the first Brahma bulls in the county.  He  died after a motor accident and is buried in San Antonio.  The cemetery is maintained by family members.
