LOCATION: Northwestern Hidalgo County. 2.3 miles
southeast of Puerto Rico on south side of FM1017.
SURVEYED: December 1975 by Wilma and Kathryn Kosar for
McAllen Genealogical Society. On south, separated by barbed wire
fence, is Lane Cemetery. Gaps in numbering indicate vacant
or unmarked graves.
HISTORY: Santa Guadalupe and El Torero Ranches were
located in San Ramon Land Grant given by Spain to Julian Farias in 1804.
From about 1850-1875, Gregorio Villarreal (1820-after 1897) lived in the
stone ranch house which he built on 1200 acres purchased from
Juan Farias.
Union veteran (1st Texas Cavalry) Leocadio
Trevino (1838-after 1913) was a substantial landholder at Rancho Guadalupe.
In 1873 he purchased the Trevino League from Santa Anita Ranch.
El Torero Ranch was owned
by the Bazan family. In 1897, Jesus Bazan (grandson of Gregorio
Villarreal) and his wife Epigmenia Trevino sold 885 acres to Jesus
Maria Vela of Laguna Seca Ranch. Gregorio's brother Hilario Villarreal
sold to Vela 1502 acres of El Torero Ranch. Vela acquired other
property which he sold in turn to Sam Lane. In 1880,Sra. Jesus Bazan donated land
for the cemetery.
