HISTORY: El Carmen Ranch was one of approximately 40 family ranches established by the Cardenas Family of La Noria Cardenena Ranch. They had received 60 leagues in San Salvador del Tule Land Grant in 1829, as settlement for a debt owed by grantee Juan Jose Balli. Jorge Cavazos Cardenas and his wife Carmen Cardenas Cavazos, who were married in 1885, owned El Carmen, where they raised cattle and cotton.  They established the cemetery in 1909 at the death of their daughter Maria Luisa.

The ranch was inherited by their daughter MissIsidora Cavazos and daughter-in-law Emma Estimbo Cavazos. It has been used as a hunting preserve in recent years. In her will, Isidora set aside one acre for the cemetery, with no drilling. The family of ranch foreman Rosalio Munguia maintains the cemetery.
