Background: This cemetery is the burial ground for the residents of
Bethel, an Africian American community
located a couple miles north of Butler.
In 1891, Bethel had 19 black students enrolled in school and two churches
that still exist: Pilgrim's Rest and Pine Hill. Other
cemeteries in the area are Lone Star and
Maise.
This cemetery was originally Bethel Cemetery if one is looking for
obituaries in old newspapers and has been
renamed Sand Hill Cemetery.
Cemetery Description: Located on top of a sand hill under a large group
of shade trees. Covers approx 3
acres. Cyclone fence encloses the cemetery.
Many unmarked graves here.
Directions: E of Fairfield on Hwy 84 about 10 miles, turn right on a dirt road
called Rabbit Ridge Road. East of Indian Creek Lake.
Off country road 240.
Oldest Marked Grave: Caroline Williams 24 Apr 1885.
