Pine Top Cemetery (B)

Freestone County, Cemeteries of Texas

Submitted by Cathy Canterbury

Status:  Active

Background:  Traditionally an African American community, Pine Top was about half a mile north of Butler.  In 1891, the school enrollment was 40 compared to Butler's 23 at the time.  FCC, pg 88 "The cemetery was established in 1886 and consists of two and two fifths acres of land."

Located:  1.5 miles north of Butler.

Directions: From Hwy 84 and FM 489 junction in Butler, go east toward Palestine about 1 1/2 miles and turn left on Co. Road 261. Go about a half a mile and the cemetery is on the left in a chain link fence.

There were 10 Markers that we could not read and 2 Headstones in the bushes they we could not get to.

[Eric Wood: I have crosschecked this list against the "Freestone County Cemeteries, Vol I" published 1976 which I abbreviated as FCC.  I included any missing because markers can become unreadable, fall down, or be vandalized. Any added have FCC marked on the line.]
