Plot map of the Valley Creek Cemetery, Fannin County, Texas.  

This map is based on a map drawn in 1960 by Jack Howard Netherton and Rev. Jerry Clemons.  The map was recently found in some of Mr. Netherton's belongings by Mrs. Nell Netherton McClain of Leonard, Texas.  I went out and developed coordinates for each marked grave in the cemetery using GPS (global positioning).  After these coordinates were plotted, I compared the marked positions with those listed on the 1960 map.  Plots shown in blue are plots that have been added after the 1960 map was completed.  Items in green are plots that were identifiable in 2005 and also marked on the 1960 map.  Items in red are items that were marked on the 1960 map but were not marked currently in the cemetery.  I positioned these plots relative to the marked plots around them.  The plots marked in purple came off of the 1960 map and were either marked graves that showed no name (wooden markers, broken funeral home markers, broken headstones, etc.) or marked plots that were reserved (i.e.. 149 was marked blank on the 1960 map but 262.Fred McCorstin is buried in that spot currently-this is the only instance that I could find - the plot boundary around these two graves is only big enough for 2 graves).  The concrete plot boundaries are colored in black as well as the cemetery boundary. This beautiful area is just a few miles north of Leonard, Texas. The cemetery is right on Hwy 896. It is nicely kept. Valley Creek was started by a trainload of Presbyterians who arrived in Denison and came by wagon to create a Presbyterian settlement. It was led by Howard Parmalee.

Howard Parmalee’s body was removed in 1905 and sent to New York City’s Greenwood Cemetery to lie next to his wife’s relatives. His wife was the niece of Inventor Samuel F.B. Morse who is buried nearby Howard and wife in Greenwood.

Sadie E. Merritt – There are two stone bases broken next to this one.

J.B. Roberts – There are two stones next to him that are in terrible shape, only things readable 1818 and b. 1832.

Spoon – In the curbing with Charlotte and John is a metal marker with only the year b. 1864 on it.
