The Roll of Honor lists three separate cemeteries at Indianola with a total of 110 burials of union soldiers. J. L. Pickard, the surgeon of the 115th U.S.C.T., was buried in the public cemetery. All the other dead were U.S.
colored troops. After the war these bodies were moved to the Brownsville National Cemetery. On September 17, 1875, a hurricane destroyed 3/4's of Indianola. Over 900 perished in the storm. The town rebuilt, however, in 1886 an even more severe storm literally washed Indianola in to the sea. Today, nothing remains except
a historic marker and a statue of La Salle, the French explorer who landed near Indianola.
