OLD RENFRO CEMETERY # 1
( a Historic Texas Cemetery)

Surveyed by Debra Coursey Pitts & son D.J. in March 2003.

NOTE:  We refer to them as Old Renfro Cemetery # 1 ( no longer in use is off of FM 1818 down Grimes Cemetery Road (formerly CR 266 ) on private property.....and Renfro Cemetery # 2 ( still used ) is off of FM 1818 on Doyle Renfro Road ( formerly CR 267 ).


Location: southeast Angelina County. From Lufkin Take Farm Road 58 to the intersection with Farm Road 1818. Turn left, proceed one-fourth mile, turn right on Grimes Cemetery road, proceed one and seven tenths miles. A locked chain  gate on left is the entrance to Tower Hunting Club (private). Follow this road about  three-quarters to one mile straight to cemetery on left. 

Marked in 2000 as a Texas Historic Cemetery the Renfro plaque reads as follows: John Folkner Renfro Sr.(1797-1859)and wife(consort) Rebecca Harrison Hicks(1808-1869) moved to Texas in 1839 by wagon from Missouri.In 1840 they settled in this area known as Renfro Prairie where they raised 10 children and were leaders in the local Methodist Church.The family prospered and were helpful to new settlers  adjusting to the East Texas life.At least 7 members of the family of Moses Warren
Spivey(1829-1904)who lived nearby on Bear Creek share this Renfro burial ground with Berry,Davis,Kirby,Payne and Renfro families.This pioneer cemetery is honored and cared for by the Spivey-Renfro Cemetery Assoc.
