New Prospect Cemetery

Angelina Co. Cemeteries of  TX

Submitted by Debra Coursey-Pitts and son D J

Surveyed by: Debra Coursey Pitts & son DJ on August 23, 2003

This cemetery is predominately a black cemetery. Most ,  if not all burials , were handled by the local funeral homes of "Tims Funeral Home" and "Colonial Mortuary" I noticed It is a rather large cemetery with gravesites "scattered" throughout it.

Location: Angelina County ,  near intersection of Hwy.69 North & Hwy.7 Turn right at this intersection onto hwy.7 ,  go about 1/4 mile ,  turn right at sign ( New Prospect Cemetery Road )....road leading to cemetery will be by New Prospect Baptist Church.

Personal observation: This cemetery is well kept(mowed)but many of headstones have  been neglected and are now broken / scattered / misplaced /unreadable ,  etc. There are MANY, MANY unknown gravesites in this cemetery. They are either now  unreadable due to neglect and age or never had a proper headstone made.  Some sites are marked only by a pile of stones with the old faded /rusty tin marker from the funeral home , others have only a concrete block to mark their gravesite. **The "unknown" sites are so numerous that I may not have mentioned them all in  the following survey. If anyone has a loved one buried in this cemetery and they are not listed / indentified below please let me know and I'll have them listed**

This cemetery no doubt started out as a family cemetery. It seems to be dominated  by the families of Preston & Arrington and the individuals they married. They are  listed in no particular order.........
