A History of Concord Community, Church and Cemetery

In 1997 we celebrated the dedication of a Historical Marker for the Concord Church and Cemetery. This was an accomplishment of dedicated work by descendents of the early settlers of this community. William A. Fitzgerald and family came to this areain the late 1840's; Elda Gatlin Parrish, Melba Gatlin Schochler, and Estelle Gatlin Mahan are his great granddaughters.

In the late 1840's, three Fitzgerald families and a single man came to Anderson County and purchased property on the headwaters of Mound Prairie Creek, about eleven miles north of Palestine. They were the first settlers to remain in the community for an extended period of time and the community came to be called Fitzgerald. They were joined in the late 1850's by the Gaines family, the Hathcocks and the Hardings. Soon after the Civil War other families began moving into the area such as the Malones, Herbroughs, Wards, Funderburks, Kelleys and Lunsfords.

In Oct. 2005 the listing for this cemetery has been proofed against earlier listing and headstones.All known burials through that date are entered. I am sure we still have some errors but I truly feel most errors have been corrected and if you will call any error to my attention I will be happy to make the correction.
